“I’m going to swing from the chandelier…from the chandelier!” Those are the first few words of the chorus to one of my favorite songs by talented singer and song writer Sia. The song is on studio album entitled 1000 Forms of Fear. It was the lead single from the album and was nominated for 4 Grammy awards. In my opinion it should’ve won at least one. The song is THAT good! Hopefully you guys agree with me.
How did you come across this song, J?
From what I can remember, I first heard this song about six years ago (just months before it made its debut). I watching a televised tennis match that took place in Australia. I heard the song in the background during one of the players’ changeovers. It instantly caught my attention. Sia has one of those unique voices that just reels you in. Also, and this is the musician in me speaking, the chord progression and the key both won me over. The verses being in B flat minor and the chorus being in F sharp major. Love it! Ok. I think that’s enough musical terminology for now (haha).
I listened closely to the lyrics and immediately Googled them to find the name of the song. When I found the name of the title, I immediately added it to my playlist. I then went through my usual “I love this song and I’m going to be obsessed with it for a very long time” phase. This obsession grew so strong that I eventually made the decision to do a cover of it on my saxophone.
Covering the song…
My decision to cover this song came when I was a senior in college. The year prior to that, I had taken a couple of required music technology classes. In those classes, I learned how to use recording software and recording techniques. With me being obsessed with “Chandelier,” I told myself, “What the heck? Let’s do it!”
I used all of my knowledge of recording and editing and did my cover of Sia’s “Chandelier.” It took quite about a day or so to get everything the way that I wanted it. Needless to say, I was satisfied with the outcome. Check it out RIGHT HERE!
