As a Christian, gospel music has been a major part of what listen to on a daily basis. And it doesn’t just stop there. It also includes many different styles of religious/Christian music. Mainly a lot of the urban styles such as R&B and hip-hop. Mary Mary’s “Heaven” is one of those songs that instantly hooked me as soon as I heard it. It’s a song that I’ve been listening to for years and will never grow tired of. That’s a major part of the reason why I decided to do my own saxophone cover of the song. Stick around and see how!
How I came to absolutely LOVE this song!
Anybody that knows me knows that I love just about every style of music from just about any decade. The music of the 90’s and mid 2000’s definitely have soft spots in my heart. I mean, what’s not to love? Catchy melodies, nice chords and harmonies, slick bass lines, and beats that make you just wanna dance. I know, “But J, all music does that.” Maybe, but you’re talking to a guy that was born in the 90s. This stuff was practically my childhood!
Mary Mary’s song “Heaven” was released in 2005 and is one of their greatest hits. My first time hearing this song was on a car ride with my mom and sisters (don’t ask me where we were going; it was 16 years ago lol). It had everything that I loved about a song. Plus, it was a Christian/Gospel song. A win-win!
Here’s something else that I found awesome about this song. Without even watching the official music video of the song, it made me think of hanging out with my friends and family in my neighborhood. Talking, laughing, walking up and down the street without a care in the world. And guess what?? That’s pretty much exactly what the video was!
Then, as I listened closer to the lyrics, I started visualizing what I thought Heaven would be like (at the time). Pretty much the same thing, except everyone is dressed in white and on top of clouds. I know that no living soul truly knows what Heaven looks like. But the image the song painted for me was enough to put a smile on my face!

Besides it being so LIT, what made me decide to cover the song?
It’s an awesome song! It makes me feel good. It makes others feel good. And I wanted to do a special cover of it.
Due to the pandemic, my church is currently doing virtual worship services that are livestreamed every Sunday. Sometimes, for the songs of praise and worship, we incorporate pre-recorded videos into our services. I often pre-record songs using the multitracking technique on the saxophone. Basically, recording separate videos of myself playing and then combining them into one video. A little time-consuming, yet so much fun!
I’ve done a few multitrack videos and needed a new one to record for one of my church’s services. Mentally, I was going through possible songs I could do, including ones that were on my “bucket list.” “Heaven” was on that list and I decided that it was time for me to do it! Really pleased with how it turned out. But I’m interested in knowing what you think.
